The Moonstone Cabochon Ring is a cocktail ring in 14k gold plated brass. A large oval moonstone cabochon is set in a hand painted black enamel bezel accented with gold studs and framed by a braided gold rope border, on a wide polished band. The moonstone carries a blue white adularescence, the light that moves across the stone as the hand turns, glowing against the dark enamel frame. Each piece is handcrafted entirely by hand.
The Romans believed moonstone was moonlight itself, caught and hardened, and Pliny wrote that its inner light waxed and waned with the moon in the sky. The shimmer has a name, adularescence, after Mount Adular in the Swiss Alps where the finest stones were once found, and it comes from light scattering between thin layers inside the stone, so the glow sits below the surface and follows the wearer's movement. It has always been the stone of travelers by night and of intuition, the sense that sees when sight can't. The black enamel around it does what the Victorian memento mori jewelers understood: darkness at the border makes the inner light read brighter, and the braided rope holds the moon in a fixed gold orbit.
J Dauphin was founded in 2006 by the Swedish French designer Johanna Dauphin. She built her foundation as a designer at Fendi and Tod's in Italy, then worked across Paris, New York, and Los Angeles, and her collections have been carried by luxury department stores worldwide. She has made custom pieces for musicians and royalty such as Keith Richards, Def Leppard, Brandi Carlile, Uma Thurman and more. Every piece is made entirely by hand using old school artisanal methods. The work draws on Victorian iconography and ancient symbols and treats jewelry as a modern talisman, contemporary relic, spiritual protection and alignment and healing.
